Scholars,

Anyone doing anything? I know of a few that are… check out the call for research from the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Here’s the link… everything needs to be in by Dec 1.

Congratulations to all of our graduates this semester.

I’m gonna miss a whole bunch you you guys ;-)
Keep in touch.

I am happy to be a part of your environment and I hope that you are comfortable coming to me and engaging me in conversation. Feel free to speak with me in a media appropriate tone. If I feel that you wander outside the boundaries of a reasonable relationship I will let you know. I hope that you will do the same…no hard feelings ;-)
Of course, the same can not be said for all of you other profs. You might want to take a little time and read the email etiquette link that follows the snippet from Dan Mitchell’s teachnology blog.

Dan Mitchell’s Teachnology Blog : News:
Be Polite, E-Polite
“Some professors respond to publicity about students’ online demands by setting out some rules.” [Inside Higher Ed]

Sarah McClure, an adjunct assistant professor of anthropology, said that she’s received some e-mail messages from students that use “completely inappropriate” language.
McClure said that some students seem to feel “that e-mail is a casual form of communication, where professional relationships somehow do not exist as they do in the classroom” students feel comfortable saying things in an email that they would never say to you in person.

Well, yes. Email is a casual form of communication. It does imply a different set of relationships than those in the traditional classroom. Students do (and perhaps should?) feel comfortable saying things in email that they would not feel comfortable saying in person or in front of a class.
In my view, the professor misses the point. Email (and IM and web site, etc.) changes the relationship between students and faculty in some ways that may, once we all adapt, benefit faculty and students.

Scholars,

My congratulations to Megan Oliver and Quentin Farmer for making an excellent presentation at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Asheville, NC this past weekend.

They stood toe to toe with scholars from all over the country. I saw representatives from a variety of Research I Universities, Ivy League schools, small private liberal arts colleges, and wonderful state universities like our own North Georgia College and State University.

I just wanted to let all of you know that you were well represented and that everyone left with an excellent image of the undergraduate research that is going on here at NGCSU.

Congratulate these two when you see them. They will be carrying really orange bags (at least Q-dog will).

Scholars,

The biology department is short on faculty and have placed a hold on all the BIOL 1007 classes that you guys need to take. They will open back up when they are sure that all their majors have a seat.

YOU NEED TO GO OVER THERE and get your name on a waiting list ASAP so you can get in the classes. Remember, This class and 1108 satisfy pre-req requirements for Dr. Noble’s Neuroscience class and for S&P (sensation and perception).

You might also try a chemistry sequence. Anyone interested in a clinical career should take both BIOL 1107/8 and a CHEM sequence with labs. I’d use one sequence in area D and the other as my electives.

Good Luck and make noise about this problem. Let us and lot’s of others know if you tried to take this class and could not. Perhaps it would put them in a position to hire some additional faculty members. Getting on the waiting list will help.

Scholars,
In addition to the mass advising session that Dr. Noble and I will be doing, all psych profs have sign-up sheets by their office doors for individual help and guidance. They generally coincide with our office hours. You will find my calendar here (it is also a link in the right hand column). As students sign up at my door I will try and put it into my calendar. You may also make an appointment if no times work out. There is no reason you should miss the mass advising as it is during our meeting period. We will try and answer all questions at that time. Bring your catalog and any notes or plans you have made on how to get out of the university in 4 years (or 5…or 6…) with a degree.

You will find our checklist here as a pdf file. Print it out and keep it with your catalog.

Passing along an email message I received:

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to tell you about an exciting program at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln for undergraduates enrolled in your psychology program. The National Science Foundation awarded our Law and Psychology Program a grant to house and train undergraduate psychology students interested in psychology and law. This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program brings 8 to 10 undergraduate students to UNL to study law and psychology in our program for a full year. Undergraduate students are provided with room and board for 1 year, along with a stipend for working in our law and psychology research laboratories. They spend time working with our joint law and psychology doctoral (JD/Ph.D and MLS/Ph.D.) students. Our faculty will mentor these undergraduate students, helping them gain valuable experience to assist in preparing them for graduate school in psychology. Last year we accepted 10 students in our first year class and each has had a rewarding academic experience at UNL as you can see from reading some of their comments on the REU website (address provided below). This year we will accept our second class of REU students beginning in summer of 2006. The website describes the program in detail. Please take a few minutes to go to the website, review it, and then pass the address along to any undergraduates in your department who might be interested in the program. The program description and application materials are available on the following website:

http://www.unl.edu/psychlawreu/

The website states that we will begin selecting REU students in mid February. We will continue accepting applications until all slots are filled. Students who apply early will have an advantage in this competitive selection process.

Thanks so much,

Richard L. Wiener

favor — non-academic post

January 26, 2006

I went up to Cleveland yesterday and met an antique dealer that graduated, oddly enough, from NGCSU in the 80s with a psychology degree.

Long story short, after talking about Dr. Noble for a while, I bought an old cabinet that will not fit into my Xterra.

Here comes the favor part:

Would anyone like to trade vehicles for an afternoon? I’ll swap you my very fast and luxurious Acura 3.2 CL S-type for use of your truck for an afternoon. I’ll also replace your gas. I will not pay any speeding tickets you might get in my car.

Thanks, C
